Manage private channels and channel emojis in Communities
Create a private channel from a Community group, change a channel between private and public, manage its members, and choose a channel emoji or icon from the channel settings.
Create a private channel
Create a private channel when access should be limited to approved channel members.
Open Portal and Groups, then select Communities.
Select Groups.
Open or log in to the group where you want to create the channel.
Select + Add Channel.
Enter a Channel Name. You can also add a description and choose an icon.
Turn on Make this Channel Private.
Select Create Channel.
The group owner and channel creator are automatically channel managers. A channel manager is an administrator for that channel, and group roles do not determine channel management. The group owner cannot leave a private channel.
Convert a public channel to private
Make an existing public channel private when its content and participation should be limited to channel members.
Open the channel.
Select the Settings gear.
Open the Settings tab.
Select Make Channel Private.
Select Confirm.
After the channel becomes private, non-members do not see it in the channel list.
Convert a private channel to public
Make a private channel public when every member of the group should be able to see it.
Open the channel.
Select the Settings gear.
Open the Settings tab.
Select Make Channel Public.
Select Confirm.
When the channel becomes public, all group members can see it, and the existing post history remains in the channel.
Add or remove channel members
Manage access to a private channel from its Members settings.
Open the channel.
Select the Settings gear.
Open the Members tab.
To add members, search for and add the users who should access the channel.
To remove a member, locate the user, select the three dots beside their name, and select Remove from Channel.
Set or change a channel emoji or icon
Choose a channel emoji or icon to identify the channel beside its name.
Open the channel.
Select the Settings gear.
Select Edit beside Channel Name.
Select Channel Icon, then choose Emoji or Icon.
Select Save.
