Manage community group members
Manage group membership by inviting people, reviewing join requests, changing roles, and removing or banning members from the group. Community groups can also be populated through an automated workflow.
Depending on the group view, member management may appear under People or Members. Use the exact tab and menu labels shown for the action you are performing.
Group roles
The current group role model uses Owner, Admin, Moderator, and Contributor.
Role | Create posts | Moderate posts | Manage members | Delete group |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Owner | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Admin | Yes | Yes | Yes | No |
Moderator | Yes | Yes | No | No |
Contributor | Yes | No | No | No |
Owner has full administrative control, including deleting the group.
Admin can add or remove members and assign administrative privileges.
Moderator can moderate content so discussions stay within community guidelines.
Contributor can post discussions, comment, and like content.
Invite members
Invite people either by sharing an invite link or by sending an email invitation.
Share an invite link
Use an invite link when you want to distribute the group invitation through another channel, including a mass email or SMS that contains the group URL.
Go to Portal and Groups > Communities > Groups.
Log in to the group.
Select Invite Members.
Select Copy the Invite Link.
Send an email invitation
Use an email invitation when you want to send the invitation directly to a named recipient.
Go to Portal and Groups > Communities > Groups, log in to the group, and select Invite Members.
Select Email Invite.
Enter the recipient name and email ID.
Set Administrative Privileges to on or off.
Select Send Invite.
Control member invitations
Use the group invitation setting to decide whether existing members can invite new members.
Open the group settings and locate Settings.
Turn Allow members to invite new members on or off.
When this setting is off, the invite button is hidden from members.
Approve or decline join requests
Public groups allow people to join immediately, while private groups require manual review for every join attempt, including attempts made through invite links.
Open Members and select Requested.
Open the three-dots menu for the request.
Select Request, then choose Approve or Decline.
Public groups expose posts and members to people viewing the group. Private groups restrict posts and members to people who belong to the group.
Change a member's role
Owners and admins can change a member's role from the member list when their configuration and permissions allow the action.
In the group, open the People tab, or open Members when that label is shown.
Search or apply filters to find the member.
Open the three-dots menu on the right side of the member's profile row.
Select the available role or access-level option.
The member-management workflow also exposes a Members > Contributors path with three-dots options for Admin or Contributor. Which options appear depends on the group's configuration and your permissions.
Remove or ban a member
Remove a member when they should leave the group but can request to join again; ban a member when they must not rejoin.
Open Members.
Open the three-dots menu for the member.
Select Ban or Remove from Group.
Banning prevents the member from rejoining. Removing the member permits a future join request.
Deactivate a group
Groups can be deactivated, but groups cannot be deleted. This group action is separate from deleting a community.
