Full vs partial refunds
For a full refund, the refund window pre-populates the total amount of the transaction automatically. For a partial refund, edit the pre-populated amount to anything less than the full amount.
Anything filled in the Notes area is for your own record and shows up under the Notes column in Refund details for that transaction.
Frequently asked questions
Where are refunded transactions recorded?
Why do I get "The referenced transaction does not meet the criteria for issuing a credit" with Authorize.net?
Authorize.net only allows refunding transactions after 24 hours from the transaction time. Whether older transactions can be refunded depends on the payment provider's policies and time limitations; check the provider's guidelines or contact their support team.
Can I process multiple partial refunds for a single transaction?
Yes, as long as the cumulative refund amount does not exceed the original transaction amount.
Can Google Pay and Apple Pay transactions be refunded?
Yes. Google Pay and Apple Pay transactions and card payments can be refunded, and the refund goes to the bank account associated with the card or Google/Apple account.
How long does a refund take to appear in the customer's account?
Generally four to six business days, depending on the payment provider and the customer's bank.
Is there a limit to the number of refunds I can process daily?
There is typically no fixed limit. Check with your payment provider to confirm whether they have any specific limitations or requirements.
Can I limit which users can process refunds?
Not yet. User-specific permissions for processing refunds are not available, so anyone with access can process refunds. To identify refunds, filter refunded transactions directly on the Transactions table.
